Clay Matthews Face: TMZ’s AI image sparks one-word X reply

Clay Matthews answered a bizarre TMZ image the simplest way possible: one word on X. After TMZ posted an AI-generated photo of the former Green Bay Packers linebacker on Friday, Sept. 4, Matthews replied with “Gigaclay,” turning a strange internet moment into a public joke almost as fast as it spread.

The post moved quickly because the image itself did. TMZ’s caption said Matthews was “spotted out grabbing groceries looking VERY different after apparently getting some work done,” but the picture showed the kind of exaggerated facial and body features that make the AI job obvious. TMZ also labeled the image as an ad on X and a paid partnership on Instagram, which only added to the strange sight of a synthetic photo being treated like a promotion.

For Matthews, the timing mattered. He is set to debut as an NFL analyst for Netflix in less than a week, with his first assignment scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, when the Los Angeles Rams meet the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. The former Packers standout spent 10 years in Green Bay, finished his 11-year NFL career with 83.5 sacks, and remains the franchise’s all-time sacks leader. He also piled up six Pro Bowl honors and had a career-high 13.5 sacks during the Packers’ Super Bowl season in 2010 before being inducted into the Packers’ Hall of Fame in 2024.

That is what makes the TMZ post more than a throwaway prank. It put a retired star with a long public record in front of a synthetic image that barely tried to look real, then asked viewers to treat it like a grocery run. Matthews did not bother with a long explanation. He met the image on its own terms, and “Gigaclay” was enough to make clear he had seen the joke, understood the joke, and decided to own it.

What comes next is not a mystery. Matthews moves from viral target to broadcast analyst next Thursday, and the same visibility that made the image travel is about to follow him into Netflix’s NFL coverage. The only open question now is whether the internet remembers the face swap more than the football resume when he takes that seat.
