Pivetta’s comeback is what makes this matchup more than a routine National League showdown. That is where this game got tricky for San Diego. The Padres were favored at home, but Pivetta was still a pitcher coming back from an elbow problem, and there is no clean way to know how sharp he would look until he actually faced hitters again. Fernando Tatis Jr. was also flagged as a strong home run bet against Irvin, which only added to the pressure on Washington’s starter to survive the top of the Padres lineup. For San Diego, that is the larger picture on Monday: a return for Pivetta, a favorable matchup on the mound and a chance to keep pace in the National League wild card chase. If the Padres are going to close that half-game gap, nights like this are the ones they have to turn into wins.
