More than 100 fans reported heat-related issues during Kentucky’s season opener against Youngstown State on Saturday, Sept. 5, and many of them were taken to the hospital for treatment. Jay Blanton said an excess of 100 people ran into trouble as the Kentucky Wildcats rolled to their first win of the season.
The number matters because the heat was a bigger issue than usual for a game that had already prompted a warning from UK Police. For Saturday’s game, the water bottle policy was changed to allow a sealed bottle of water smaller than a liter, a sign that organizers knew conditions could be rough before the first whistle.
That warning did not prevent a heavy response once the game was underway. Fans in the stands still reported symptoms serious enough to draw medical attention, turning a routine opener into a day where the weather overshadowed the result on the field.
WKYT reached out to UK Police for comment on the heat-related illnesses, but no further response was included. The unanswered question now is how many of those fans needed hospital care and how severe those cases were.
