Murray State Football begins its first road test of the season on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Racers meet Middle Tennessee at 6 p.m. CT in Murfreesboro. The game at Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium gives Murray State an early chance to see whether the pressure it created in Week Zero can travel.
The Racers enter 0-1 after losing to Eastern Illinois, but the defense flashed enough to stand out even in defeat. Murray State logged five sacks and 12 tackles for loss, and freshman James Morrow led the way with 1.5 sacks. Collin Shannon, in his first start, completed 26 of 40 passes for 257 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, while Tyrell Campbell led the receivers with 66 yards.
That production matters because this is not a neutral assignment. Middle Tennessee owns the edge in the series, 38-30-3 overall and 22-14-2 at Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium, and the Blue Raiders have not opened 2026 yet. Roman Gagliano is expected to start at quarterback after making three starts as a freshman in 2025, when he threw for 1,005 yards, seven touchdowns and ran for 166 yards and two scores while posting a 2-1 record as a starter.
The recent history is not kind to Murray State. The teams last met on Sept. 16, 2023, when Middle Tennessee won 35-14, and the Racers' most recent win in the series came in 1997. That is the part of the matchup that keeps the opener from feeling like a routine nonconference date: Murray State has the disruptive front to make things uncomfortable, but Middle Tennessee has the home record and the quarterback plan to make the Racers prove it on the road.
So Saturday is less about reputation than translation. Murray State has already shown it can create chaos up front; the question now is whether that edge is enough to turn a strong start into a road result in Murfreesboro.
