Utah State is set to open the season with McCae Hillstead back where the Aggies wanted him all spring: at quarterback. Hillstead was named QB1 in April, and Utah State will carry that decision into its game against Idaho State, giving the program its first real look at how the offense looks with him steering it again.
The choice matters now because Utah State is trying to move into a new season with a settled plan after a 6-7 finish and a 34-21 loss to Washington State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Hillstead is not walking into this cold. He had four starts as a freshman in Logan before spending two seasons at BYU, and Robert Anae has said he wants to use his passing ability to open the offense rather than lean on the run game.
That puts the opener in focus for reasons that go beyond one depth-chart note. Bronco Mendenhall and Nick Howell are both back, Anae is in place to reshape the attack, and Mendenhall said the program got through fall camp healthy and without significant injuries. For Utah State, that combination gives the staff a chance to start the year with continuity while the school moves from the Mountain West to the Pac-12.
Idaho State arrives with a test already on tape. The Bengals beat VMI 38-10 in Week 0, scored 28 points in the third quarter and showed a passing game that can pile up yards quickly, with Jordan Cooke throwing for 325 yards and four touchdowns. Cooke passed for 3,052 yards last season, while Idaho State ran only 25 times for 88 yards against VMI, a split that suggests the ball may be in the air early and often again.
That is where Utah State’s other side of the ball comes in. The secondary will be challenged early, and that makes the return of Brevin Hamblin and the additions of Chapman Lewis and Antonio Bluiett worth watching right away. Utah State has more than one receiver option to sort out, too, with Anthony Garcia the most tenured returnee, Demick Starling expected back after redshirting because of injury, and newcomers Javon Robinson and Eli Wood adding to the mix.
For Hillstead, the opener is more than a first start back. It is a first answer. Utah State already made the quarterback decision in April, and now the Aggies will find out whether that choice can set the tone for a season that begins with conference change in the background and a pass-first test in front of them.
