Keeler said the competition was messy early, when the quarterbacks were not playing well and the passing game was only adequate. He said both Sheppard and Smolik have since made dramatic improvements, which is why the staff is willing to let the game sort out the depth chart. Sheppard has seen limited action across five games in two seasons at Rutgers and completed both of his collegiate pass attempts for 23 yards. Sam Brown gives Temple a steadier place to begin. He enters the game as the starting running back, though Keeler said the staff has been trying to protect Brown from himself after a hard hit on Aug. 20 left him limited in practice. The coach said Brown is a compulsive worker and that the goal is to have a fresh version of him on game day.
