Duke will open its 2026 regular season against Tulane on 3:30 pm ET at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, NC, with the game set to air on ACC Network. For Manny Diaz, it is the first hard edge of a new season and the first chance to see how his team handles a real test after a summer of uncertainty.
The matchup arrives with a simple number attached to it: Duke lost to Tulane 34-27 in New Orleans in 2025, and the rematch comes after both sides changed a lot. Diaz is entering his third year as Duke's head coach, and the Blue Devils have won their season opener in both of his first two seasons, both against Elon. Tulane is a different task.
That matters because the roster Duke put together around Darian Mensah is gone. Mensah transferred to Miami this offseason, and Cooper Barkate, Que'Sean Brown and Sahmir Hagans are out too. Barkate was Duke's first 1,000-yard receiver since Jamison Crowder in 2014, and his exit with Mensah leaves the opener with real questions about who carries the passing game when the ball is finally kicked in Wallace Wade Stadium.
Tulane has its own reset. Jon Sumrall left this offseason to become the next head coach at Florida, and Will Hall, who was Tulane's passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2025, is part of the staff now tasked with carrying the offense forward. Hall's background includes head coaching jobs at West Alabama from 2011-2013, West Georgia from 2014-2016 and Southern Miss from 2021-2024.
That is what gives this opener its weight. Duke's recent habit of easing into the year with Elon is one thing; trying to answer Tulane, a team that already beat it and now sits across from it in a season opener on ACC Network, is another. The game is not just the first date on the schedule. It is the first proof point for a Duke football team trying to find out how much of last year's offense it can replace before September is even old news.
