The Atlanta Falcons briefly swapped in a throwback logo as their social media profile image ahead of Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, then changed it after the design drew sharp criticism online. The new image was up only for a short time before the team replaced it with a side view of the throwback helmet.
The post still remained online Friday morning, and the X version had drawn 43 million views by then, turning a routine pregame update into a far bigger conversation than the team likely intended. The Falcons will wear throwback uniforms this weekend for the first time this season, which appears to be why the team chose a design tied to its throwback helmet.
That helmet is meant to honor the Falcons’ original red helmet from 1966 to 1969, when the falcon logo sat on the sides and stripes ran over the top and down the center. But many viewers said the black falcon, rigid angles, and red background with black, white and gold stripes created an ugly resemblance to imagery used in Nazi-era Germany, and the reaction spread quickly across Instagram and X.
Some of the comments on Instagram made the point less delicately. One user wrote, “This one is a little out of mein kampfort zone,” while another said, “NFL: Stop hate. End racism. Increase our presence in Europe,” and a third added, “Atlanta Falcons: Invade Poland.” The posts announcing the profile picture remained online Friday morning, even as the image itself had already been pulled.
The Falcons and the NFL did not immediately respond Friday to requests for comment, leaving unanswered why that specific throwback image was chosen and who approved it. For now, the episode stands as a reminder that a design meant to evoke team history can become something else entirely once it meets the internet.
