A Monroe County Circuit Court granted a temporary restraining order on Friday that restored eligibility for eight athletes, including Indiana football players Kellan Wyatt and Stephen Daley, to play college sports for now. The order means Wyatt and Daley can suit up for Indiana against North Texas this weekend.
For Stephen Daley, the ruling lands at once on the field and on paper. He is listed with 19 tackles for loss, and the court's order keeps those numbers from being frozen into the past while the case moves toward a Sept. 11 hearing. The same order also covers Kellan Wyatt, who had eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, and it reaches six other athletes whose eligibility had been in doubt.
The immediate effect is simple: the athletes are eligible today because the court said the plaintiffs showed by verified pleading and supporting evidence that immediate and irreparable injury would occur before notice could be served and a hearing held. It also found a probable right to relief and said the threatened injury outweighed any temporary burden imposed by the order pending an expedited hearing. In plain terms, the court decided the players should not sit out while the dispute is argued.
That dispute centers on the NCAA's decision not to extend the five-years-to-play-five eligibility reform to athletes from the high school class of 2022. The order says the NCAA may not declare the eight athletes ineligible on that basis, and it also may not enforce its ghost transfer rule that blocks transfers outside the sanctioned annual window. If the athletes want to enter, the NCAA must open the transfer portal for seven days.
There is still a catch. The court put the players back in uniform only for the moment, and it set a hearing on the motion for a temporary injunction for 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, in Monroe Circuit Court. The order goes further than a stopgap, saying it is the court's intention to place the plaintiffs in the position they were in at the end of their last college sports season, and that as long as they would have been eligible academically and otherwise to keep playing in the following semester if they had a fifth year of eligibility, they are eligible today.
Daley and Wyatt did not have any interaction with the NFL in the offseason, and for now their attention is back where Indiana needs it, on the field this weekend. What happens after Sept. 11 will decide whether this is a brief reset or the start of a longer eligibility fight the NCAA still has to answer.
