Caitlin Clark did not start for Team USA against China in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup opener on Friday, entering midway through the first quarter instead of in the opening five. She finished the period with two points, four assists and one rebound.
That mattered because Clark’s senior international debut was supposed to be one of the main draws of the tournament, and it began with Kara Lawson keeping the same starting guards in place. Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young opened alongside Breanna Stewart, Kahleah Copper and Napheesa Collier, while Clark watched the game begin from the bench even after a record-setting August in the WNBA.
Team USA did not ease into the matchup. Jackie Young scored seven of the first 20 points, and Clark’s first stint came with the game already moving at pace. By the end of the quarter, she had touched the ball enough to shape possessions, but not enough to force a change in Lawson’s lineup decision.
That choice is the friction point in Clark’s debut. She arrived in the tournament after scoring or assisting on 44.7 points per game in August, becoming the first player in WNBA history with back-to-back 30-plus-point and 10-plus-assist games, including 34 points and 12 assists in a 111-91 win over the Connecticut Sun before the international break and 37 points with 10 assists in an Aug. 23 win over the Chicago Sky. She also had five games in August with at least 20 points and 10 assists, and averaged 24.4 points per game.
Lawson has described Clark as “great” and “coachable,” and said she saw a player whose passes, shots, anticipation and confidence stood out from the first time she coached her this spring. Even so, the opener against China showed how quickly international basketball can strip away the familiar hierarchy from the WNBA and put a different role in front of the same player.
Team USA faced China in the 2022 gold-medal game, so the matchup already carried weight before Clark’s first minutes arrived. What remains unanswered after the opener is not whether she can score or create, but how Lawson plans to use her once the tournament moves beyond the first quarter and the bench becomes part of the story.
