Chad Morris said Wednesday that he will call Clemson Football plays from the field in 2026, choosing to stay near the players rather than work from the coaches' box. He said the move is about more than sightlines. It is about making sure the offense feels him in real time.
Morris said the staff discussed the box option, but he decided against it because he wants players to see his urgency. He said they need to sense both his intensity and, when things go badly, his ability to steady them. That is the job he is taking on as Clemson's offensive coordinator after being hired in the 2026 offseason.
The choice matters because it sets the structure for how the offense will operate before a snap is ever taken. Morris will be on the field with Dabo Swinney and Tom Allen, while support in the box will come from offensive analyst Mike Miller, assistant tight ends coach Brad Glenn, assistant offensive line coach Carson Kramer and Freddie Kitchens. Kitchens is a former North Carolina offensive coordinator and is on staff as a volunteer, giving Morris another set of eyes even as the final call comes from below.
The decision also marks a clear contrast with Garrett Riley's setup in 2025. Morris said every coordinator fits the job differently, and his version depends on direct contact with players, not distance from them. He has made no secret that he wants to be seen from field level, a preference that matches the energy he brought during his earlier time with Clemson in the 2011-14 era.
There is still a practical tradeoff in that choice. The box can offer a broader view of the game, but Morris is betting that Clemson needs visible urgency more than altitude. If the offense starts fast, the field view will look like conviction. If it stalls, the same setup will test whether his presence can calm the group the way he says it should.
For now, the plan is set. Morris is not coaching from above. He is putting himself where the players can see him, and Clemson Football will open 2026 with its new play caller trying to lead from the same level as the offense he is asking to follow.
