Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are set to wear the same jersey in September, when the U.S. goes to Berlin for the Women's Basketball World Cup. The move puts two players long cast as adversaries on the same stage as Team USA tries to extend its grip on the event.
The timing matters because the WNBA will pause for two weeks during the 2026 season, giving the World Cup a clear place on the calendar and putting Clark and Reese in the center of the sport's attention while league play is on hold. The U.S. has won four straight World Cups and is carrying a 30-game win streak into the tournament, so this is not just a showcase. It is a test of whether the country can keep winning with two of its most watched young stars in the same lineup.
Reese has already said she wanted this outcome. In an October 2024 article, she said that one day she hoped they could be teammates. That became real first at the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game, where Clark had 10 assists in Team WNBA's win over the U.S. Olympic team and Reese finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The two then carried that partnership into March, when they helped the U.S. go 5-0 in Puerto Rico at the World Cup qualifying tournament.
That trip also showed how much work still sits behind the easy storyline. Clark appeared to ignore a high-five attempt from Reese in one game, a small moment that fit the larger fact that their names have been attached to rivalry for more than three years. It began after the 2023 national championship game between Iowa and LSU, continued in a 2024 NCAA Tournament rematch and then followed them into the WNBA as the top two contenders for Rookie of the Year. Reese herself said during the qualifying tournament that team chemistry is everything and that players who are used to doing everything for their own teams have to come together and find their roles.
That is the real measure in Berlin. Clark and Reese will not have to carry the U.S. alone. They will play alongside A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Chelsea Gray, which means the question is less whether the pairing is possible than how much of the spotlight they can share while still protecting American dominance.
