Schalke 04 are back in the Bundesliga on Sunday evening, and their first test after a three-year absence comes away to Augsburg at the WWK Arena. For Schalke, it is the start of a new top-flight chapter; for Augsburg, it is the beginning of a 16th consecutive Bundesliga campaign.
The timing gives the match extra weight. Schalke return as 2. Bundesliga champions after finishing top of the second tier with 70 points, and they did it with the best defensive record across Germany's top three divisions last season. That form is why the opener matters now: it is the first measure of whether the promoted side can turn control at one level into stability at the next.
Augsburg, meanwhile, arrive with plenty of change already behind them. Manuel Baum was brought back in December as an interim replacement for Sandro Wagner, then handed a two-year contract after helping steady the club. Since then, as many as 16 players have departed, while Augsburg have brought in new money and new faces, with Rodrigo Ribeiro costing more than £4m and Michael Gregoritsch's return made permanent after his loan spell last season.
Gregoritsch gives the fixture a sharper edge. He finished last season as Augsburg's leading scorer with six goals, and he will line up against the club he helped last year after Augsburg opened this campaign with a 2-0 win over Energie Cottbus in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Schalke, though, carry a problem that numbers do not hide: they have won just two of their last 45 away matches in the Bundesliga, a record that hangs over any trip back to the top flight.
That is the friction inside Sunday night's opener. Schalke have the momentum of promotion and a side that defended better than anyone in the country outside the elite, but they are stepping into a league that has punished them away from home for years. If they can leave the WWK Arena with a result, the return will feel real. If they cannot, the old Bundesliga questions will be back immediately.
