J.J. McCarthy is expected to make the Minnesota Vikings’ initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season, easing one of the team’s biggest quarterback questions as the roster deadline closes in. reported Sunday that the former No. 10 overall pick will at least stay on the roster for now.
The timing matters because the Vikings had until Sunday at 6 p.m. ET to decide whether to cut McCarthy if a trade could not be worked out. That deadline turned a growing round of Vikings news into a hard roster call, and it left McCarthy’s status tied to a decision that had to be made immediately rather than later in camp.
The case for keeping him starts with the fact that Minnesota has already invested heavily in him. McCarthy was selected No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL draft, and moving on after one season would mean giving up on that pick before the team had much chance to see what he becomes. Even so, his first season did not settle the debate. He completed 57.6 percent of his passes, threw for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and finished with a 35.6 QBR that Pro Football Reference listed as 30th in the league.
That production helps explain why the roster decision ever came up. Minnesota went 9-8 last season while rotating through McCarthy, Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer under center, and the quarterback room never found a clean answer. On SportsCenter, Jeremy Fowler said McCarthy’s name did not come up much in trade talks for backup quarterbacks, but he also said the Vikings have Wentz and must decide whether to make Wentz the two and McCarthy the three, or move on from that setup altogether.
That is the friction inside the report: McCarthy is being kept on the initial roster even though he had been viewed as a possible cut candidate amid trade rumors. The decision does not settle his place in the offense, and it does not erase the uncertainty around how the Vikings want to order their quarterbacks. It only narrows the question to the next one, which is whether Minnesota keeps McCarthy, tries to move him, or reshapes the depth chart around Wentz before the season begins.
