Michael Block surged into the lead at The Ally Challenge at Warwick Hills on Friday, opening with an eagle and then adding five birdies to reach 13-under and move two shots clear of Steven Alker. The sponsor's invitee now goes into the final group with Pádraig Harrington and Alker.
That shift is why his name is suddenly at the center of the event. Block, who has been playing on sponsor's invitations, arrived with the kind of round that changes a leaderboard fast and leaves the rest of the field chasing from behind.
Harrington is the one doing most of that chasing. The 55-year-old began the day with a seven-under 65, but he was still three behind after Block moved ahead, even after Harrington worked his way back with birdies on holes 8, 14, 15 and 18 and gave up a shot on the par-5 13th. He finished the round in solo third, still close enough to keep the pressure on the leaders without ever quite catching them.
That gap matters because Harrington turned 55 on Monday and is still trying to put together a second win of the campaign. His opening 65 had him in the mix from the start, but Block's pace on the front side forced him into a chase he could not fully erase through 18 holes. The final grouping now brings the top three together, with little room for another slow stretch from any of them.
Chris Devlin was also pulled further back after a two-over 74 left him in a tie for 40th at -1. For Block, the next round is the test that follows every fast start: whether a sponsor's invitation can turn into a win against players who have spent the week waiting for a mistake.
