The Seahawks signed Terrion Arnold on Saturday, adding the former first-round pick to their 90-man roster while Derrick Graham was waived to clear space. The move brings Arnold into the building, but it does not answer when he will be able to take the field.
That is why the commissioners exemption list is drawing attention now: Seattle agreed to terms with Arnold earlier this month, then completed the signing on Saturday even as his availability remained tied to an ongoing legal matter. Mike Macdonald said the team understands it is a serious situation and that the league will decide if and when Arnold's return to play is.
Macdonald said the timetable is still being worked out and that the team does not yet know when Arnold might be available. He also made clear that Seattle saw enough in Arnold to keep pursuing him, saying the club felt strongly about him during the draft process and that he spoke with quite a few teams before landing with the Seahawks.
That interest sits alongside the part that still has not been resolved. Arnold was released by the Lions earlier this year, and Seattle's addition of him now comes with the expectation that league process will determine whether he can join the field soon, later, or not at all. The roster move is done. The hard part is still out of the team's hands.
For Seattle, the signing gives it a player Macdonald described as energetic, physical and a fit for the secondary, especially in pattern-match concepts. For Arnold, the next step depends on how the league handles the matter from here, which is the only answer that matters until his status changes.
