Sophie Turner will play Lara Croft in Prime Video's new Tomb Raider series, putting her at the center of one of Amazon’s biggest franchise bets. The project does not yet have a known release date, even as it is expected to arrive sometime in 2027.
The casting gives the series a recognisable face and ties Turner to a role that has long carried its own mythology. She said she has been a long-time fan of Tomb Raider and Lara, adding that the character has always felt emboldened in a male-dominated world and has always seemed to her like a fierce female role model.
That matters because Amazon paid a reported $600 million for the Tomb Raider rights from Embracer Group, a huge outlay that raises the pressure on the show to land. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the creator, writer and co-showrunner, and the cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Celia Imrie, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Bill Patterson, Jack Bannon and John Hefferman.
Prime Video has already shown interest in video game adaptations after Fallout, and Tomb Raider is the next test of whether that momentum can carry another major property. But the series still has no date attached to it, which leaves 2027 as the broad promise rather than a launch plan.
For Turner, the timing also brings a smaller piece of news from her film work: Barely Lethal, the 2015 film that runs 98 minutes and stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jessica Alba, Dove Cameron and Samuel L. Jackson, starts streaming for free on Plex on September 1. The result is a day that links an old credit to a new franchise turn, while the biggest question around Lara Croft remains when the series will actually be ready.
