The weekend begins with the top of the board still crowded, and the margin between first and the players chasing him still thin enough to turn on one hot round.
That is why Hovland’s name is drawing attention now: the season-ending event has the TOUR Championship title and the FedExCup still in play, and Friday left the field packed within three shots at the halfway point. Scottie Scheffler, who shot 67, sat two behind, while Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup were one back at 9-under 131 after matching 67s. Even Cameron Young, who was last after the opening round, surged with an 8-under 62 to move within two shots of the lead, a reminder that the leaderboard can flip fast when scoring opens up.
Gerard did his damage with five relatively easy birdies and a putt from just inside 80 feet, while Hovland answered with one of his five birdies at the 15th, a par 3 that played 155 yards. The softer setup helped, with rain on Thursday and an overcast Friday leaving the course receptive before a little wind arrived late in the day. J.J. Spaun withdrew Thursday with a shoulder injury, which trimmed the field to 29 players before the pressure of the weekend settled in.
Gerard has made it plain that the week means more than a line on the leaderboard. He said a good week could go a long way toward helping his chances for Presidents Cup captain’s picks, and that he was aware of it even as he tried to keep the focus on the next shot. Hovland has not said as much publicly here, but the position is the same: three shots separate a packed group, and the player who handles Saturday best may not just own the lead by nightfall, but carry the best path into the final day and the prizes still waiting at the end of the TOUR Championship.
