Shailene Woodley said her Mary Jane Watson scenes were cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 after she filmed three scenes with Andrew Garfield. The 2x Golden Globe nominee said she had been cast as Mary Jane for Spider-Man and called it her dream role.
Woodley said she and Garfield shot the scenes in 2014, only to be told about a year later that she was no longer in the movie. She said the film team had added too many new characters and told her they would wait for what happened between Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield before bringing Mary Jane into the story.
That explanation made the cut feel less like a rewrite than a postponement, but Woodley said the delay never paid off. She said the follow-up film that was supposed to make room for Mary Jane never happened, so the role stayed off-screen even after the scenes had already been filmed.
Woodley also left open another possibility: that the scenes were dropped because they simply did not work. She said she could have been terrible and the filmmakers decided not to use her, which is the kind of answer that lingers because it leaves both creative judgment and studio timing in the same unresolved place.
The discussion resurfaced as Garfield has been asked again about Spider-Man, and his answer was no more direct than Woodley’s account. He said he would love to play the character again, but only if it were very weird, and he added that he would want to do something very strange. For now, Woodley’s Mary Jane remains a role that existed long enough to be filmed, then disappeared before audiences ever saw it.
