Florida officials said 163 missing children were recovered in Operation Statewide Shield, a five-day sweep they described as the first statewide child recovery effort in Florida history. Three people were arrested, and investigators said the operation is still open.
The children ranged from 2 months old to 17 years old, and the recovery touched every major corner of the state. Officials said 46 children were found in Tampa Bay, 41 in Miami, 32 in Jacksonville, 21 in Orlando, 12 in Fort Myers, 8 in Pensacola and 3 in Tallahassee. That scale is why the search matters now: this was not one rescue, but a coordinated effort that pulled children out of multiple regions at once.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement led the case with Special Counsel for Human Trafficking Rita Peters. Officials said many of the recovered children were victims of human trafficking, and that the operation also reached beyond Florida through recoveries linked to six U.S. states, Puerto Rico and 12 foreign countries, including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominica, Finland, Ghana, Guatemala, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan. Recovered children were taken to specialized hubs for social services, medical care and child welfare support.
The arrests point to how broad the investigation still is. Michael Prescott was arrested on Aug. 21 by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and faced three counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, one count of felony battery and one count of aggravated assault. He also had an active warrant for interference with child custody. Robert Ferral Allison was arrested on Aug. 20 by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on a charge of lewd and lascivious battery on a victim 12 to 16 years old, and Jayden Allen Harwood was arrested on charges of interference in a child custody case and resisting officers without violence.
Officials said they believe more arrests will follow and that they have not yet identified everyone behind the illegal operations. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said prosecutors will seek maximum sentences, including the death penalty where applicable for child sex abusers. For the 163 children recovered, the case does not end with the announcement; it now turns on how many of the adults involved can still be found and charged.
