Jack Barton is said to be leading the shortlist for the next James Bond as screen tests are scheduled to begin in early September. The report puts the 31-year-old at the front of a casting race that has suddenly moved from rumor to a real timeline.
That makes Barton the name drawing the most attention right now, especially because insiders have been calling him “The One.” He is listed alongside Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal and Harris Dickinson, but the fact that tests are about to start gives the search a sharper edge than any previous speculation.
Barton was found by casting director Nina Gold as she searched the UK for unknowns who could step into the role of 007. He has mostly worked in British TV, with small roles in Steven Knight’s SAS: Rogue Heroes and Netflix’s Heartstopper, plus a very small part in Poor Things. That background explains why his name landed as a surprise, even in a search built around newer faces.
The report also says Amazon/MGM is looking for a younger actor, preferably under 30, who can carry the franchise across five films. That creates the obvious wrinkle in Barton’s case: he is 31. The age target suggests the studio wants room to build a long run around one lead, yet the reported frontrunner sits just outside the preferred range.
Denis Villeneuve has been hired to direct, and Steven Knight has been brought on to shape the script, but the final call is not Amazon’s alone. The decision is expected to be a group effort involving Villeneuve, Nina Gold, Amy Pascal, David Heyman and Knight, which means Barton’s position is strong but not settled.
The process now has a date on it. Daniel Craig’s 007 run began in 2006 and lasted 15 years, and the next chapter is finally entering the stage where names can be tested against the role rather than only discussed around it. Early September will show whether Barton is not just the reported favorite, but the one who can survive the room.
