Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving after a single-vehicle crash involving a Lamborghini on the M3 southbound near Minley interchange, with a court hearing now set for 15 September.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight constabulary said the charges follow the 28 May collision, in which no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Sterling, 31, is also accused of possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen.
The case has moved quickly from a road collision into the courts, putting one of English football’s best-known players back in the legal spotlight. Sterling scored 20 goals in 82 appearances for England and was part of Gareth Southgate’s side that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.
His club career has stretched across Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Feyenoord, but he is now without a club. Sterling won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup with Manchester City, left Chelsea in 2022, spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal and later joined Feyenoord on a short-term deal until the end of last season. He was also made an MBE in the 2021 Queen’s birthday honours for services to racial equality in sport.
The unanswered point is not whether the crash happened. It did. The issue now is what evidence led police to treat a single-vehicle motorway collision as dangerous driving, alongside the separate allegations over nitrous oxide and a specimen. Sterling is due at Basingstoke magistrates court on 15 September, where the next stage of the case will begin.
