Hulu cancels Not Suitable For Work after one season

Hulu has opted not to renew Not Suitable For Work for a second season, ending Mindy Kaling’s romantic comedy after one season on the Disney streamer. The decision comes two months after the show finished its Season 1 run and leaves the stories around AJ, Josh, Abby, Kel and Davis without a payoff.

The timing matters because Kaling had already been talking like a second season was in motion. In June, she said the writers room had been up for Season 2 and that she was keeping her fingers crossed for an official pickup for production. That hope is gone now, and the cancellation turns a show that looked like it had momentum into another short-lived entry in Hulu’s YA lineup. The series had been created by Kaling and produced by Warner Bros. TV, after starting life under the title Murray Hill.

The ending of the first season made the cutoff feel especially abrupt. The two-episode finale closed on a big cliffhanger and a couple of smaller ones, with AJ, Josh and Davis locked in a love triangle and Abby, Kel and Kel’s theater colleague caught in another. Davis and AJ were also left in limbo at work after they stood up to their boss Bill, so the finale did not just leave romantic questions hanging. It left the characters’ futures unsettled in more than one direction.

That is where the friction sits. The series reportedly drew viewers and generated buzz, which usually helps a show reach another season, but Hulu still passed. The streamer has also recently passed on Buffy: New Sunnydale, Foster Dade and Don’t Get High, a reminder that the setback is not isolated. Not Suitable For Work also completed Kaling’s loose trilogy about life stages, following Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives Of College Girls and ending with post-college life in New York on NSFW.

Variety first reported the cancellation, and the practical answer now is simple: there is no Season 2 pickup, no production start and no official path to resolve the cliffhangers Kaling and her cast were already preparing to revisit. For viewers who expected the show to keep going, the sharpest question is not whether the stories were left open. It is why a series with visible buzz still could not clear Hulu’s bar for a second round.
