Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa will meet again on Monday night when Chelsea face Fulham at Craven Cottage in the Premier League’s opening round, a fixture that puts two old friends on opposite sides of the line. Alonso is 44 and Arbeloa is 43, but their careers have been intertwined for more than two decades.

Alonso arrived at Liverpool in August 2004, Arbeloa followed to Anfield in January 2007, and they later moved together to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 before Alonso left in 2014 for Bayern Munich and Arbeloa stayed on for two more years before a final playing season at West Ham United.
The numbers alone tell part of the story. They shared the pitch 38 times for Spain and won the European Championship in 2008 and 2012, plus the World Cup in 2010. Both ended their playing careers at the end of the 2016-17 campaign, then crossed into coaching in Madrid’s academy structure: Alonso started with the under-13 side in the summer of 2018 and Arbeloa took the same age group two years later. They also spent six months working close to each other at Madrid’s training facilities, speaking regularly about academy players who might be ready to move up.
There is, though, a sharper edge to this meeting than a simple reunion. Both men are new appointments at this stage, but both were also sacked by Real Madrid last season. Alonso moved from Bayer Leverkusen after the end of 2024-25 and later joined Chelsea as manager in May. Arbeloa, who had been promoted from the reserve team, was dismissed by Real Madrid last season before taking over at Fulham in early July.
That background explains why the match carries so much interest. Alonso won the German league and cup double with Bayer Leverkusen in 2023-24 before the move to Chelsea, while Arbeloa worked his way up at Real Madrid before taking charge of Real Madrid Castilla last summer. Their paths have repeatedly crossed, and the respect between them is not new: Arbeloa told reporters in December that Alonso is an exceptional coach, while Alonso has said Arbeloa could be a future Real Madrid manager.
Fulham have also drawn on that Madrid link this summer, signing Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios. The result is that Monday’s game is more than a season opener. It is the first test of two managers whose lives in the game have run alongside each other from Liverpool to Madrid and now back into the Premier League, with Craven Cottage setting the stage for the next turn in a long shared story.
