Moises Caicedo missed Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham on Monday night after a setback in training left him out of the matchday squad for Xabi Alonso’s first league match in charge. Chelsea began the season in a west London derby at Craven Cottage without one of their most influential midfielders.
The absence mattered immediately. Reece James partnered Romeo Lavia in midfield instead, while Enzo Fernandez was only named on the bench as Chelsea opened one Premier League fixture with a different shape than many expected. Alonso said during the week the players involved had “a few setbacks” and added that, with Moi and any other player, he did not want to take too much risk because they were not ready to play.
That left Chelsea to start the season with a midfield that looked more improvised than planned. Caicedo had been expected to anchor the side, but the injury concern forced Alonso to manage the opening night without him, and without Marco Palestra as well. Alonso said the group would be handled “week-by-week,” which is as close as he came to offering a return timeline.
The detail that makes the omission sharper is that Chelsea were already being judged on their midfield options before kickoff. Fernandez on the bench fed the sense that the opener had not delivered the selection many had anticipated, even with a manager of Alonso’s calibre taking his place on the touchline. The team still had enough quality to compete, but the first answer to a simple question was the least convenient one: Caicedo was not ready.
For Chelsea, that means the opening weeks of the season may be about caution as much as control. Alonso has no clear date for Caicedo’s return, only the assurance that he will not be rushed back for the sake of one match. Until then, the midfielder’s availability will be measured one week at a time, and Chelsea’s new manager will have to keep reshaping his side around that reality.
