Olivia Rodrigo put out "Serena Joy" on Friday as a very limited CD single, and only 500 copies existed. All of them were sold only at Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California, before the store said Friday night that the run had already sold through.
That makes the song a rare physical release for a new Rodrigo track at the exact moment fans were looking for it. The wider digital release is planned for Monday, giving the CD drop a short head start and turning one record store into the only place to buy it first.
The song was not a surprise title out of nowhere. Rodrigo confirmed "Serena Joy" in June after fans spotted it in a studio photograph that listed 18 songs under consideration for her "You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love" album. Two months ago, she told Etalk that she really loved the track, but that it did not fit on the album because the record was meant to trace a relationship from beginning to middle to end. She added that she hoped it would be part of something else down the line.
That framing matters because the title points to "The Handmaid's Tale," yet the lyrics printed on the front of the CD do not mention Serena Joy or any other overt reference to that world. The name carries the weight of the character, but the song itself stays elsewhere, leaving the title to do the work that the words do not spell out. In plain terms, the record invites a connection without making it explicit.
Analog Music Shop said Friday morning that Rodrigo was releasing a new song ahead of Daisy Chain Fields and that the physical copies would be sold exclusively through the store. By Friday night, it said all 500 had gone. The only thing left open is how the song lands once it reaches a much bigger audience on Monday, when the brief scramble over a tiny CD run gives way to the version most listeners will hear.
