Alejandro Balde was left out of FC Barcelona's squad for the visit to Elche, a sharp shift on the eve of the league debut that has pushed his future back into focus. The 22-year-old defender, who has made 168 appearances for Barcelona, is suddenly the name people are watching most closely.

The omission matters because it came after Hansi Flick said he wants players who are fully convinced and at 100 percent, and that he will wait until the end of the transfer window before settling changes. In practical terms, that puts Balde's absence in the same frame as a possible exit rather than a routine matchday decision, especially with Manchester United now described as the main candidate to sign him.

There is no clean explanation inside the squad announcement for why Balde was left out. He is not a fringe figure by record or workload. In the 2025/26 season he played 42 matches, scored no goals and provided three assists, while his Barcelona numbers overall stand at three goals and 21 assists. That is why the omission lands harder than a simple rotation call: it removes a regular first-team player from a match Barcelona approached as its opening league test.

Flick had set the tone earlier at the Saturday press conference at Ciutat Esportiva, saying it is difficult when a player has great quality but must also be convinced to compete in his position. He added that he watches the players every day, judges their level and needs everyone at full commitment so the team can succeed. Taken together, those remarks and Balde's absence suggest a selection built around certainty as much as ability.

The squad itself underlines that Barcelona still had options across the pitch for Elche. Joan García, Szczesny and Eder Aller were listed as goalkeepers; Joao Cancelo, Pau Cubarsí, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martín, Jules Koundé, Eric García, Xavi Espart, Pesquer and Cortés as defenders; Gavi, Fermín López, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Marc Bernal and Fariñas as midfielders; and Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Karim Adeyemi, Anthony Gordon and Hamza Abdelkarim as forwards. But Balde's absence sat apart from that group, because it pointed less to a simple tactical shuffle than to a player whose place may no longer be secure.

That is what makes the next step matter. If Barcelona's decision is tied to the transfer window, then Balde's status could still change before it closes, and Manchester United's interest would become the story to watch as much as the match itself. If it is not a transfer move, Barcelona will still have to explain why one of its most established young players was the first major omission of the league season.
