Gunner Rivers left St. Michael Catholic’s opener on Aug. 22 after taking a hard hit while scrambling, and the senior quarterback did not return after halftime. The NC State four-star commit was helped off the field holding his right leg before later being seen heading to the locker room with a knee brace.

The injury came in the first quarter of a nationally televised game against Battle Ground Academy, with St. Michael Catholic leading 7-6. Before he went down, Rivers had been sharp, going 3-for-4 for 81 yards and a touchdown, including a 26-yard screen pass to Nygel Mitchell that opened the scoring.

What made the moment harder to read was the sideline optimism that followed the hit. Ashley Stroelein said Philip Rivers relayed that his son had taken a blow to the right knee, but that the knee looked fine and the problem was spasms. He was getting work on the knee, had it taped up and was being treated by trainers, with the early belief that he might be able to come back.

That picture changed fast. reported that during the break Rivers put his helmet on and tried to throw the football. On the first throw, he planted on his right foot and immediately winced in pain. When both teams returned for the second half, he was back without his helmet and shoulder pads, a clear sign his day was over.

Marshall Pitre took over at quarterback, but the larger question now is not who finished the game. It is how serious the right-leg injury is for a senior quarterback whose next step matters well beyond one opener. The early signs pointed to something manageable; the way the evening ended suggested St. Michael Catholic was right to brace for more than a brief scare.
