Ed Orgeron keeps visible LSU role as Lane Kiffin calls it a fit

Ed Orgeron has been a steady presence around LSU since Lane Kiffin announced his return to Baton Rouge back in May, turning up at Elite Football Camps, NIL signings and, now, Fall Camp. His official title is special assistant to recruiting and defense, a label that fits the work LSU appears to want from him even if his face is still one of the most familiar on the football side.

That is why Orgeron is being searched now. He is not simply back around LSU; he is back at a moment when the program is in camp and every visible hand around the roster matters. The former head coach has been around the team throughout the summer, and his presence has only become more noticeable as Fall Camp has moved forward.

Kiffin has made the case that the arrangement makes sense for everyone involved. He said it was “the perfect situation for everybody involved,” pointing to Orgeron’s ties to LSU, his passion for the state and its players, and the fact that he has already won a national championship. Kiffin added that Orgeron is also easy to use in recruiting because he can sell a player on why LSU is the right place.

There is still a small but telling wrinkle in how LSU is presenting him. Orgeron’s headshot sits under football support staff on the roster, below general manager Billy Glasscock, not with the coaching staff, even though he remains highly visible around the program. That distinction suggests LSU is using his experience without formally putting him back in the coach’s box.

Orgeron and Kiffin have worked together before, including on staffs at USC and Tennessee, and that history helps explain why the pairing has resumed so naturally. Since May, Orgeron has been part of LSU’s recruiting and football-related activity, but the school has not detailed what his day-to-day responsibilities look like beyond the title. For now, the clearest answer is the simplest one: Orgeron is back, LSU is using him, and his role appears built around being seen, heard and trusted in the rooms that matter most.
