Navy USS Benfold loses power for four days after generator casualty

The USS Benfold lost power for four days after an engineering casualty involving its generators on July 24, leaving about 300 sailors aboard without drinking water, meals, functioning toilets or air conditioning until repairs were completed in the Philippines.

The ship later arrived in Subic Bay on July 28 and left port on Aug. 8 with all engineering, combat systems and crew support systems functioning normally. The Navy said the crew showed resilience, grit, professionalism and unwavering steadiness in the response, and there were no injuries.

Matthew Comer said the ship had “reported an engineering casualty involving its generators, causing a loss of power,” a loss that turned a standard day at sea into a test of endurance for everyone on board. The cruiser USS Robert Smalls provided meals, and once the Benfold reached Subic Bay, the crew was given food and lodging off the ship while repairs were made.

What remains unclear is what specifically failed inside the generators. The Navy has not explained that part, even though a generator casualty is, by definition, a failure in the ship’s power-producing system rather than a total loss of the hull or combat systems. That matters because the outage was not brief: it ran long enough to strip away basic living conditions for days, even as the ship stayed afloat and no one was hurt.

The episode became public only after it was first reported by USNI News, and it comes as the Navy has been managing a wider stretch of ship and carrier activity across the Pacific and the Middle East. The Benfold was later towed to Subic Bay for repairs, which in practice meant outside assistance was needed to move a ship that could not restore itself under its own power. It also leaves one practical question hanging: whether the breakdown was a one-off failure or a warning about how much strain the ship can absorb before routine operations stop cold.
