The Cubs recalled Owen Miller from Triple-A Iowa on Monday and put him on the 26-man active roster as a backup infield option after Dansby Swanson went on the injured list with an oblique strain.

The move gives the Cubs another shortstop option at a moment when they are trying to absorb a cluster of roster changes. James Triantos was optioned to Triple-A Iowa, Edward Cabrera was placed on the injured list with a blister and Javier Assad was recalled, while Daniel Palencia was moved to the 60-day injured list to clear room on the 40-man roster.

Miller arrives with a case that is easy to understand. He was batting.296/.350/.457 with 10 stolen bases in 96 games for Iowa this year, and he also has 303 games of MLB experience from 2021 through 2025 with Cleveland, Milwaukee and Colorado. That kind of profile matters on a roster that needs someone who can cover multiple infield spots without forcing a more dramatic reshuffle every time a starter is unavailable.

Swanson’s absence may not be long-term, but it is enough to change the Cubs’ shape right now. He left Sunday’s game after taking an awkward swing and had an MRI before the injured-list move became official, with the best-case expectation being that he is 100 percent by October. That leaves Miller in a practical role rather than a flashy one: the Cubs need a steady backup until Matt Shaw is ready to return, and on Monday they chose the player with the most direct path to filling that gap.

The open question is not whether Miller can help in the short term. It is how long the Cubs keep him on the active roster, because the answer depends on how quickly the infield injury picture settles and how soon Shaw is available again. For now, Miller is the one in the room who gives the Cubs the cleanest insurance at shortstop.
