The Great British Bake Off reveals first look with Nigella Lawson joining

The Great British Bake Off has shown its new season for the first time, and the biggest change is on the judging panel: Nigella Lawson is joining Paul Hollywood. Channel 4 shared the first-look image ahead of the return, while Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding are back for their fourth outing as presenters.

The post landed with a simple promise — "Life is about to get sweeter. Bake Off is coming soon..." — and the picture did the rest. It showed Hollywood, Lawson, Hammond and Fielding together in front of a pink backdrop, all smiles and leaning into the new line-up. Hollywood added in the comments that the year had been "a dream," and Lawson replied: "I love being part of this gang!"

That warm tone matters because it comes with a clear change in the tent. Prue Leith has left the judging line-up, and Lawson now steps in beside Hollywood for a season that is already being sold on chemistry as much as cakes. Viewers of The Great British Bake Off do not have to wait long to see whether the pairing works: a brand-new group of amateur bakers will arrive next month, and the first public sign from Channel 4 is that the show wants the transition to feel like an easy one.

There is, though, one small crack in the polished picture. Hammond has said the chemistry between Lawson and Hollywood is "unbelievable," but also that they "don't always agree" while filming. That is the sort of friction the series has always needed. If the smiles in the first-look image are the marketing, the disagreements are likely to be the television.

The new season keeps the familiar frame around the change. The Great British Bake Off and Bake Off: An Extra Slice both air on Channel 4 in the UK, and in the US the show is known as The Great British Baking Show and streams on Netflix. For now, the key question is not whether the format will survive the shake-up; it is whether Lawson and Hollywood can turn a fresh judging pairing into the show’s next long run.
