Kate Douglass broke the women’s 50-meter freestyle world record twice in one day at the Pan Pacific Championships, then won the final in 23.19 seconds. She had already gone 23.49 in the morning preliminaries, shaving the mark away before lowering it again in the evening.
The result mattered because the record had belonged to Gretchen Walsh at 23.55 seconds, and Douglass had to take it away before Walsh nearly took it back in the final. Walsh finished second in 23.74 seconds, with Meg Harris third in 23.89, a tight finish that still left Douglass clear at the top.
Douglass, a five-time Olympic medallist who earned silver in the 50 free at the 2024 world championships and did not swim the event at the 2024 Paris Games, had first lowered the record on June 19 at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Indianapolis with 23.59 seconds. Nine days later, Walsh improved it again, setting up a sprint race that was already one of the fastest in the sport before this meet.
What made the day stand out was not just the time, but the tempo. Douglass returned 25 minutes after the 50 free final and finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.57, behind Alexanne Lepage’s winning 2:21.73. That kind of turnaround leaves little room for celebration, or for recovery, and it showed how close the final session was packed for one of the meet’s biggest names.
For Douglass, the sharper question now is not whether she belongs at the front of the race. It is how much lower a record can go after being broken twice in a single day, and whether the next sprint final leaves any breathing room at all.
