Disney is moving ahead with Zootopia 3, and it made the call in public at Disney’s D23 event in Anaheim. Ke Huy Quan joined Ginnifer Goodwin onstage to announce the next film, which will shift the franchise toward birds.

The announcement lands while the series is still at full strength. Last year’s Zootopia 2 became the highest-grossing Hollywood animated movie of all time with $1.8 billion at the global box office, after the original Zootopia crossed $1 billion worldwide and introduced Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde in 2016. That history is why Disney can turn a sequel reveal into a marquee moment.

Quan and Goodwin were the names Disney put on the stage, and both are set to return in Zootopia 3. That is enough to signal continuity, but not the whole picture. The film is now in motion, yet Disney has not confirmed when it will reach audiences or whether the rest of the franchise’s familiar voices will be back with it.

The cast question matters because Zootopia has kept expanding well beyond the original movie. Zootopia+ extended the world on Disney+, and Zootopia 2, directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, added a long list of characters including Gary De’Snake, Pawbert Lynxley, Milton Lynxley, Cattrick Lynxley, Kitt Lynxley, Dr. Fuzzby, Robert Furwin and Brian Winddancer. Disney also says the sequel earned a best animated feature nomination at the Academy Awards, which only deepens the pressure on the next installment to match the scale of what came before.

For now, the cleanest read is that Disney is not just protecting a hit, but building a longer runway for it. Zootopia 3 is real, birds are the new focus, and the studio has already shown enough to keep the franchise moving even as it leaves the most obvious unanswered question hanging: when the next trip to Zootopia will actually begin.
