The Portland Thorns removed Caiya Hanks from the season-ending injury list on August 14, clearing her to be available for selection for the first time since last June. The move puts her back in the frame for Portland’s next match against Orlando Pride on Saturday at Providence Park.
For Portland, the timing matters because the change comes one day before the club goes back on the field. For Hanks, it ends a year-long rehabilitation process that kept her out after an injury last June and gives the Thorns a player who had already shown she could contribute in the NWSL.
Before the setback, Hanks, 21, started seven of her 11 NWSL appearances and produced twice and one assist in her rookie season. Those numbers do not promise an immediate impact, but they do explain why her return is more than a roster note: Portland is regaining a young attacker who had earned a real role before she was sidelined.
The Thorns said Hanks received extensive support from their medical, performance and technical staff during the recovery. That support has brought her to this point, but the club has not said how much she will play against Orlando Pride, leaving open whether she is a full option or simply back in the squad as she continues to build toward match fitness.
What is clear is that Portland has a new piece available at exactly the moment it needs one. Hanks is back on the selection list, the rehabilitation is over, and the next question is not whether she can return, but how quickly she can turn that return into minutes.
