Donny Schatz turned a postponed Saturday afternoon into another Knoxville Raceway victory, winning the 25-lap FVP 65th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals Presented by Casey’s main event after starting 11th in the C main. He collected the $7,500 top prize and added his 10th all-time win at the track.
The race had been pushed back from Friday night, then reshaped by the updated format that locked the top 50 in points into the A, B and C mains. Carson McCarl led early from the pole, with Steven Snyder Jr., Giovanni Scelzi, Chris Windom and Schatz in pursuit before the running order broke open on a restart. Schatz slid by Scelzi and McCarl in turn two and never gave the lead back.
That move mattered because the field had already been through a rough sequence before the finish. The race went from early two- and three-wide action to a track that rubbered up later, and the restart that gave Schatz the opening also turned into the race’s hardest moment. Giovanni Scelzi and Brenham Crouch were involved in the crash, and Crouch was upside down before being taken in for observation.
Schatz said his team had made real progress and that the track conditions fit his car at the right time. He said the early running favored him before the surface changed and everybody could move through the rubber, leaving Saturday afternoon to turn on who got the best restart and who survived it. Steven Snyder Jr. finished second, followed by Carson McCarl, Chris Windom and Rees Moran, while Crouch’s incident became the race’s sharpest reminder of how quickly the Knoxville Nationals can change shape. Schatz’s win also underlined how much the event had shifted by Saturday, with the postponed program and the revised format leaving no margin for error and the top 10 now set for tonight’s C main.
