Chris Jones did not hide where he stands: he does not want to play in the preseason, and he wants Andy Reid to leave the Chiefs' starters on the sideline for Saturday's opener against the Los Angeles Rams. Speaking after practice on Thursday, Jones said, “Why play the starters?” and warned that there is “so much risk” in putting them on the field before the games count.
That message landed one day before Kansas City opened its preseason against a Rams team that was taking a different route. The Chiefs were planning to rest Patrick Mahomes, while the Rams said Stetson Bennett would start at quarterback and Matthew Stafford would sit out. For Jones, that setup only sharpened the argument: if the other side is not treating the game like a regular-season test, he sees little reason for Kansas City to do it either.
Jones was not making a blanket case against work in August. He said it is good to get repetition, and he added that if he had to play, he would “buckle up.” But the balance of his comments made the preference clear. He said he would rather not play, and even framed the matchup as one he would like to use against opposing starters, saying, “The mentality is like, ‘I want to play against your starters,’” before adding, “Give me your best talent.”
That is the friction the Chiefs have to sort through. Jones wants the edge that comes from real contact and live reps, but he is also plainly wary of the injury cost that can come with meaningless snaps. The Rams have often treated preseason games that way, and Kansas City is making the same calculation with Mahomes. If Reid follows that path, Jones' comments will sound less like a complaint than a preview of how carefully the Chiefs intend to handle their core players this month.
The next answer belongs to Reid. Jones has said what he wants. The question now is whether the Chiefs will match their star defender's caution and keep the starters out on Saturday.
