Ohio State is moving senior day to Week 1, turning its Sept. 5 opener against Ball State into the ceremony that honors seniors instead of saving that moment for the season-ending game against Michigan. The change, announced Friday, pulls one of the program’s oldest game-week traditions away from the rivalry stage in Columbus.
The timing matters because Ohio State-Michigan still sits on the calendar as the last home game, on Nov. 28, and because the team has spent recent seasons trying to make that matchup feel less ceremonial and more ordinary. Jim Tressel, who led Ohio State to the 2002 national title, will be enshrined in the team’s ring of honor the same day, giving the opener a different kind of significance than senior day usually carries.
That is a sharp break from how college football usually works. Seniors are typically honored before the final home game of the regular season, when the emotion of the last home walk lines up with the last chance to play in front of the home crowd. Ohio State is choosing the opposite order: the ceremony comes at the start of the year, when the season is still full of possibilities and when the Michigan game is no longer being used as the program’s capstone.
The move fits a pattern. Ryan Day shifted the marching band’s annual practice in front of the team last year, and Ohio State flew to Ann Arbor instead of taking a bus. The Buckeyes still beat Michigan 27-9 in Ann Arbor last November, but the broader message has been clear: the rivalry is being handled with less pageantry than in the past, even after Ohio State lost at home to Michigan in 2022 and after Michigan’s upset in Columbus in 2024.
That tension is part of why the change will draw attention beyond one Saturday in September. Michigan remains the opponent that defines the end of the season, and Ohio State still gets that game in Columbus this year for the first time since 2024. But by moving senior day to Ball State in Week 1, Ohio State is saying the rivalry no longer has to carry every ritual attached to its football schedule. What happens on Sept. 5 will set the tone for the year; what happens on Nov. 28 will decide the rivalry.
