Edson Barboza says the next walk to the Octagon could be the last one. The 40-year-old UFC veteran is set to face Estaban Ribovics at UFC 330, and he put retirement on the table while saying he is focused only on this fight.
That makes the lightweight bout carry more weight than a normal opener on the five-fight main card. Barboza will be making the walk for the 33rd time in the UFC, and all but six of his professional MMA bouts have come under the UFC banner, a run that has made him one of the promotion’s longest-tenured fighters.
His timing also matters. UFC 330 is scheduled to return to Philadelphia, PA for the first time in nearly 10 years, and Barboza’s fight with Ribovics opens the main card before the two title bouts at the top of the bill. For a veteran who has spent most of his career under the UFC banner, the setting gives his latest appearance a bigger stage than the record alone would suggest.
Barboza last got his hand raised in late 2023, when he defeated Sodiq Yusuff in a UFC Fight Night main event. Since then, he has dropped three straight, which is why the retirement talk now sits beside a fight that would usually be framed only as a test between ranked-level lightweights. He did not say the decision is final. He said he knows the finish line is getting closer, compared it to the final stretch of a marathon, and made clear he is not thinking too far ahead.
That leaves the result at UFC 330 as the part that matters most. If Barboza wins, he can keep the door open. If he loses, the finish line he keeps talking about may arrive in Philadelphia, PA, after one last main-card appearance.
