Wendi McLendon-Covey has joined the cast of Romy And Michele 2, the sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion that is already in production. The addition expands an ensemble built around Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, while the film’s plot and McLendon-Covey’s character are being kept under wraps.

That makes the casting news the clearest new piece of information about a project that has already moved past the talking stage. The sequel began shooting in Los Angeles in June and is set to stream as a Hulu Original in the U.S., so each new name points to a film that is actively taking shape rather than sitting in development.

For McLendon-Covey, the role adds another comedy title to a résumé that already includes NBC’s St. Denis Medical. For the sequel, it adds another familiar face to a return that already includes Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell, along with new roles for Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, Nathan Lee Graham, Anna Baryshnikov and Sofia Wylie.

The sequel is being directed by Tim Federle from a script by Robin Schiff, who wrote the original 1997 film for Disney’s Buena Vista. That film followed two inseparable friends who tried to reinvent themselves as successful career women to impress former classmates at their 10th reunion in Tucson, and it built the kind of cult recognition that makes every casting update land like a small event.

What remains unknown is the part that McLendon-Covey will play, and the story of the sequel itself. But the pattern is clear enough: Romy And Michele 2 is filling out fast, and the next real update will be another cast addition, or the first look at how all these names fit together on screen.
