Emma Frost has been remade as a mutant demon in X-Men United #6, and the new look is not subtle. The White Queen appears with yellow skin, talon-like claws, pointed horns and blood-red eyes, then leads Wolverine, Kitty Pryde, Beast, Magneto and others into the Penumbra, a private Hell for those who harm mutants in life.
The issue matters now because Emma has been part of the X-Men since the Genoshan Massacre, and Marvel has spent years turning a former supervillain into one of the team’s sharpest protectors of young mutants. Here, that history gets weaponized. The demonic Emma Frost stands at the center of a scene that sends the visitors into the Mirror-Mirror, where manifestations of their sins attack them and their own teammates appear as monstrous versions of themselves.
X-Men United #6 is credited to Evan Narcisse, Eve L. Ewing, Eduardo Pansica, Tiago Palma, Oren Junior, Brian Reber and Joe Sabino, and it leans hard into the kind of psychic spectacle that only the X-Men can sell. The team has set up base in Greymatter Lane, a psionic construct on the psychic plane that welcomes mutants from across the world and makes reality unusually malleable. That setting helps explain why the Penumbra can feel so complete: when reality is already soft, fear can take shape fast.
But the clean nightmare does not hold. The X-Men escape after realizing the entire confrontation was an illusion orchestrated by a hidden foe, and different teams were dragged into different bizarre scenarios. That leaves the biggest question hanging over the issue: the demon in the costume is real enough on the page, but the force behind the trick is still hidden, and Ben Liu’s newly arrived reality-warping powers have been partly hijacked in the process.
So the redesign does more than give Emma Frost a horror-movie turn. It folds her old life as a deadly supervillain, the manipulation that once kept her under Sebastian Shaw, and her long run with the X-Men into one image, then uses that image to point back toward an enemy the team has not yet named.
