A man was taken into custody after disrupting Shabbat services at Central Synagogue in Midtown East on Friday, and police said the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime. The 46-year-old was removed after the disturbance escalated into an assault inside the synagogue.
As security tried to escort him out, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, he struck a 63-year-old woman, damaged synagogue property and spit at and headbutted a member of the security team. An NYPD sergeant working detail at the synagogue stepped in and took the man into custody immediately, she said.
The incident drew sharp reaction because it unfolded during Friday Shabbat services at 642 Lexington Avenue, where people had gathered in a place that should have felt routine and safe. Mamdani said he was horrified by the assault at Central Synagogue during services and said every New Yorker must be able to observe religion without fear of violence, while New York Attorney General Letitia James called the attack appalling and unacceptable.
The part that does not fit neatly with the accusation is the public reassurance that followed: Jessica Tisch said there are no additional threats at this time even as investigators continue to treat the case as a possible hate crime. That leaves the motive unresolved, but it also means police do not believe the synagogue faces a continuing danger from the same episode.
James said she was relieved that everyone is okay and recovering, and that is the point now. The woman and the security team member were hurt in the attack, the suspect is in custody, and the remaining question is not whether the disturbance happened, but what led him to target Central Synagogue in the first place.
