Bayonne Little League and Darien Little League met Friday, Aug. 14, in the Metro Region championship game, with a place in the 2026 Little League World Series on the line. The winner was set to move on to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, while the season for the loser was over that night.
The game was scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on in Bristol, Connecticut, and it carried more than one prize. A Bayonne win would send the Bees to the Little League World Series in Williamsport beginning Aug. 19, and it would do something no New Jersey team has done since 2021. It would also make Bayonne the first Hudson County representative to reach Williamsport since West New York American advanced in 1968.
Bayonne entered the title game undefeated in the Metro Region tournament and had already shown why. It beat Connecticut 8-2 and New York 12-2, outscoring its first two opponents 20-4 before reaching the final. That run gave Bayonne a clean path to the championship game and turned the matchup into a test of whether the early dominance would hold when the bracket narrowed to one game for everything.
Darien took a harder road back. After losing its opening game to Bayonne, it had to fight through the elimination bracket and did so by beating Rhode Island 6-2 and New York 8-4 to earn a rematch for the Metro Region title. That setup gave the final its edge: one team was trying to finish an unbeaten run, and the other was trying to turn a loss into a second chance.
The structure of the Metro Region left no room for recovery once the championship game began. The winner would represent the region at the 2026 Little League World Series, which starts Aug. 19 in Williamsport. The loser would leave with nothing more to play for, even after surviving a tournament that had already stretched into an all-or-nothing rematch.

By the time the first pitch was thrown, Bayonne and Darien had already proven they could win different kinds of games. Friday night decided which of them would get one more round in Williamsport.
