Midge Purce was back in Gotham FC's starting XI on Friday night, giving Shaun Harris just one lineup change for the matchup with the Kansas City Current. It was Purce's 65th start for Gotham FC, and it came as the club prepared for a top-of-the-table meeting that could further shape the stretch run.
The match was set for 8 p.m. ET and carried nationally on Prime Video. Gotham FC entered it with a 12-3-4 record, 40 points and a four-point lead over the second-place Washington Spirit, while also trying to stretch an unbeaten run to eight matches. The teams had already met twice this year, including Gotham FC's win over Kansas City in the NWSL Challenge Cup in June.
That is part of why Purce's return mattered. Gotham FC had won 11 of its last 14 regular-season matches and had given up only 12 goals, a pace that made it only the sixth team in NWSL history to finish a regular season with 12 or more clean sheets. With 11 matches left, every adjustment in the XI carries more weight than it would in August.
Harris still had to manage the lineup around absences. Denise O'Sullivan was out with a knee injury, while Kayla Duran and Emily Sonnett were on the season-ending injury list with knee injuries. Even with those gaps, Gotham FC kept a spine that included Rose Lavelle alongside Jaelin Howell and Savannah McCaskill in midfield, Jess Carter and Tierna Davidson at center back in front of Ann-Katrin Berger, and Sam Kerr up front with Jaedyn Shaw and Jordynn Dudley flanking her.
The return of Purce also sat beside a broader attacking picture. Shaw had scored her fifth goal of the season in last week's win over San Diego, and she led Gotham FC with eight goal contributions in 2026 NWSL play. Kerr's next goal would make her the first NWSL player to reach 80 regular-season goals, but the striker still shared the club-record tie with Esther González. For Gotham FC, the move was less about one player alone than about keeping a first-place team sharp while the schedule tightens. Purce is back in the XI. Now the test is whether Gotham FC can turn that small change into another result against Kansas City.
