A woman walking a beach in Sea Isle City found 29 dead juvenile dogfish scattered along the shore, a rare sight that turned a routine day on the Jersey Shore into something unsettling. Michelle Greenling said she first noticed a couple of sharks and kept walking, but when the number grew to three, four and five, she realized something was wrong.
The discovery matters today because the sharks were not found in a single pile or after a storm cleanup. They were spread between 29th and 39th streets, roughly 20 miles north of Cape May, and the count was high enough to stand out immediately. Greenling called the scene “definitely concerning” and said she was worried about both the water and the sharks.
Mike Heithaus, the dean of Florida International University's College of Arts, Sciences & Education, said seeing that many sharks washed up on the beach is pretty rare. He said dogfish gather in large schools, which means a group could be hit by the same event at the same time. That makes the find notable, but it does not make the cause obvious.
A toxin may sound like one possible explanation, but Heithaus said that would normally raise questions about why other marine species were not affected as well. That is the part that keeps the story open. If the same water or the same event killed this group, there should be some broader footprint. So far, there is no sign of that, and the dead sharks remain an isolated and unusual find.
For beachgoers along the Jersey Shore, the immediate answer is simple: nearly 30 juvenile dogfish were found dead where people were walking. The harder question is what killed them, and until that is known, Sea Isle City is left with a rare scene and no clear explanation.
