Dan Pitcher has made the path plain for Colbie Young: the Bengals are not just looking at a six-foot-four target with a 215-pound frame, they are looking at a rookie willing to do the work that does not show up in highlights. Pitcher praised Young for taking on the dirty work and the thankless jobs that can help a receiver earn trust early.
That matters now because Young, 24, was selected by the Bengals in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft and is trying to carve out a place in a wide receiver room where catching passes is only part of the job. The question around him is not whether he can look the part. It is whether he can do enough of the small, unglamorous things to convince the Bengals he belongs on the field.
Pitcher framed Young in a way that fits both his size and his utility. He said people notice the physical traits first, the ability to ward off contact down the field and make plays. What the coach wanted to emphasize, though, was the less visible side of the job: a receiver who is willing to block, absorb contact and help the offense even when the ball is going somewhere else.
That is where Young’s value may be decided. Pitcher pointed to a play in which a receiver digs out a safety on duo, creating just enough space for Chase Brown to turn a modest lane into a bigger gain. The difference he described was stark: 14 yards instead of four, because somebody did a task most fans would never celebrate. For a rookie, that kind of work can be the fastest way to earn more opportunities.
The friction is simple. Young has the frame and the physical style that make him easy to project as a downfield threat, but the early case for him with the Bengals may rest even more on whether he embraces the jobs that do not end with a catch. Pitcher made clear that those snaps matter, even if they are hidden inside the run game or in the space before the ball arrives.
So the next step is not a mystery, even if the exact role is. Young has to keep giving the Bengals reasons to value him on downs that never turn into a target. If he does that, the catches can follow. If he does not, size alone will not force playing time.
