That is the hook people are likely searching for today: the show has taken another hard left into style, this time into a black-and-white detective mood with high-contrast shadows, a central bar or cafe, doppelgänger characters and corrupt local authorities. On Mat'aar XII, the heroes even have to dress like knock-off Humphrey Bogarts and Carmen Sandiegos in order to pass, which makes the whole thing feel less like a routine mission and more like a studio-built dream of another era.
The setting matters because Mat'aar XII is not just scenery. The episode ties the mission to a Klingon occupation there, which gives the noir gloss a political edge and explains why the away team has to move carefully once it lands. IGN describes the world as a throwback to film noir and Casablanca, and the episode leans into that idea with the kind of smoke, shadow and mirror-image plotting that make the format instantly legible.
What blunts the effect is that the episode’s central conflict does not seem to rise to match the look. Una Chin-Riley is newly promoted and clearly meant to carry more weight here, but her struggle over helping local resistance fighters is not fully developed, leaving the visual conceit to do much of the heavy lifting. The result is an episode that knows exactly how it wants to look and sound, even if it is less sure about how far it wants to push Una’s dilemma.
That gap matters because Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already made a habit of special-format episodes. Season 2 featured Those Old Scientists, a crossover with Lower Decks, and Subspace Rhapsody, a musical episode, both of which signaled a series willing to break form. The question now is not whether the show can stage another gimmick well; it is whether these detours are starting to crowd out the straightforward adventure stories that once gave the series its cleanest momentum.
For now, "A Case of Chiaroscuro" lands as another carefully designed swing for the series, with the noir frame doing most of the narrative work while Una Chin-Riley’s moral bind remains the part still waiting for fuller shape. If the episode follows through, the Klingon occupation on Mat'aar XII could give the black-and-white setup real weight; if not, it will be remembered more for how it looked than for what it left behind.
