Chuba Hubbard hamstring injury makes him week-to-week, but opener outlook stays intact

Chuba Hubbard will sit out Saturday's preseason opener against the Bills after Dave Canales said Thursday that the running back is week-to-week with a hamstring injury. Canales also said he is confident Hubbard will be available for the Panthers' regular-season opener against the Bears.

The update matters because Hubbard was supposed to work with Carolina's starters in Saturday's preseason opener before the injury changed the plan. Instead, Jonathon Brooks will start, and Trevor Etienne and AJ Dillon will also mix in at running back while Hubbard watches from the sideline.

Canales had already said Wednesday that Brooks would mix in with Hubbard during Saturday's preseason game against Buffalo, which now reads like an early sign of how Carolina wants to spread the work if Hubbard is limited. For a player who was expected to be part of the first group on the field, the shift is immediate and practical: the Panthers have to sort out live-game reps without the runner they had been preparing to feature.

The friction is in the timing. Week-to-week can cover more than one kind of recovery, but it does not lock Hubbard out of the opener, and Canales drew that line himself when he said he expects him back for the regular season. That leaves Saturday as the first real checkpoint and the next measure of how much Carolina can ask of Hubbard once the games start to count.
