Kelly Ripa was back on screen with Mark Consuelos on the August 10 episode of Live! with Kelly and Mark, but the appearance was not a live comeback. The show had taped the episode before her break, making it her first time seen on camera after two weeks away for recovery from a gum graft surgery.

That is why the episode is drawing attention now: viewers saw Ripa again while the show was still moving through its summer run of pre-recorded installments through Labor Day. Her absence had already been explained on the July 27 episode, when Consuelos said she needed the procedure and noted that it was meant to reduce teeth sensitivity and gum recession by moving healthy gum tissue to exposed tooth roots.

Consuelos also said Ripa’s dentist had told her five years earlier that she could have the surgery in about five years, prompting her to joke, “I didn’t think I’d still be on the air in five years!” By the time the August 10 episode aired, she was reported to be doing well and doing great, which helped quiet any concern about the break itself.

The wrinkle is that the return looked newer than it was. The episode gave the impression of a fresh on-air reunion, yet it had been recorded before Ripa began her absence, so it did not signal an immediate end to the recovery period. During the weeks she was off, the show used guest hosts and fill-ins, and the schedule remained built around the annual summer hiatus.

The next date that matters is September 8, when Ripa was set to return to the show. That is the point that will show whether the August 10 appearance was just a preview of her recovery or the first step back into the daily routine of Live! with Kelly and Mark.
