Emeka Egbuka limped off Wednesday's practice with trainers after being rolled up on following a reception, a brief scare that put his status for the rest of the week in focus. He stayed down for a moment, then left under his own power before being examined on a trainer's table at the sideline.
That matters now because the Buccaneers are moving through practice week with Friday's preseason opener against the Jets ahead, and every missed rep can change how the receiver group is sorted. If Egbuka loses time, Ted Hurst, Kameron Johnson and others could pick up more first-team work.
The concern is tempered by what came before and what was said after. Todd Bowles said Tuesday that Egbuka did not practice because of soreness in his lower body, and on Thursday he was expected to be back on the field. That leaves the injury question narrowed to how much, if any, practice time he actually loses between now and Friday.
There is still a practical catch for the Buccaneers. Even a short absence can matter in camp, especially when another receiver group is already dealing with its own rotation issues and coaches are trying to sort out who gets the cleanest snaps with the starters. Egbuka's brief trip to the sideline did not look catastrophic, but it was enough to interrupt a rep and create an opening.
For now, the important detail is not that Egbuka left. It is that he was set to practice again Thursday, which suggests the team does not see this as something that should keep him out for long. The next rep will tell more than the first scare did.
